Phyllis MAYCOCK MBE (1922-2005)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Phyllis Maycock, retired bus conductress, was surprised by Michael Aspel in the Oxfordshire village of Charlton-on-Otmoor.
Phyllis, who was born in Charlton-on-Otmoor, went into service as a housemaid at the Rectory Farm in the village of Oddington after leaving school at the age of 14. During the early years of the Second World War, Phyllis found work on an assembly line; however, by 1942, she was working as a conductress with the Honours Bus Company, which later became known as the Charlton-on-Otmoor service.
A two-week temporary stint became a full-time job, and Phyllis remained with the bus company for over 50 years, retiring on Christmas Eve in 1993. Having become well-known for her caring personal touch with passengers, she was awarded the MBE in the 1994 Queen's New Year Honours List for her services to transportation.
