Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Pam AYRES (1947-)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Pam Ayres, poet and comedian, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews at Thames Television's Euston Road Studios, having been led to believe she was there to record a different television programme.
Pam, who was born in Stanford in the Vale, Oxfordshire, travelled the world for four years with the Women's Royal Air Force before working as a secretary for a manufacturing company in Witney. She began performing her poetry at a local folk club, which led to appearances on BBC Radio Oxford and BBC Radio 4.
Having appeared on the ITV talent programme Opportunity Knocks in 1975, she left her job to pursue poetry full-time the following year. In addition to publishing books of her poems, she also made a wide variety of guest appearances on television and radio shows, including ITV's sketch show What's On Next.
