Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Jim WICKS (1894-1980)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Jim Wicks, boxing manager, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews during a gathering to celebrate his 82nd birthday in a London hotel banqueting hall, from where the programme was then recorded.
Jim, who was born in Bermondsey, was a keen boxer in his youth. After leaving school at 14, he found work in the local docks before serving with the London Scottish Regiment during the First World War. He later worked for a local bookmaker, but by 1930, he was promoting dog racing at Wandsworth Stadium.
His keen eye for boxing talent led to him becoming a boxing manager and a founding member of the Boxing Board of Control. Under Jim's management, boxer Henry Cooper was undefeated in British and Commonwealth heavyweight championship contests for twelve years and held the European heavyweight title for three years.
