Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Leonard SACHS (1909-1990)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE – Leonard Sachs, actor, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews after finishing a business meeting in Belgravia, London.
Leonard, who was born in South Africa, began acting while attending university. After moving to the UK, he worked in repertory theatre in Bournemouth, Windsor, and Glasgow before co-founding the Players' Theatre in London, a venue established to preserve the tradition of music hall entertainment.
After serving with the Royal Artillery during the Second World War, Leonard returned to the Players', where, having developed the role of chairman, he became a household name when the concept appeared on BBC television in 1952 as The Good Old Days. In addition, he continued acting in many television plays and series, notably the BBC drama series The Glittering Prizes.
