Tony BRITTON (1924-2019)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE – Tony Britton, actor, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews outside the Café Royal on London's Regent Street, where he was meeting actors Richard O'Sullivan and Tessa Wyatt.
Tony, who was born in Birmingham, served with the Royal Artillery during the Second World War before deciding on an acting career. A season at the Library Theatre in Manchester led to his London debut in the play The Rising Wind and further success with seasons at the Old Vic and the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Having secured a film contract with British Lion, Tony appeared in numerous British films during the 1950s, including The Birthday Present and Operation Amsterdam. During the 1970s, he starred in a theatrical tour of the musical My Fair Lady before making an impact on television with the ITV political drama The Nearly Man and the ITV sitcom Robin's Nest.
