Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Florence PRIEST MBE
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Florence Priest, medical missionary, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews in the audience at Thames Television's Euston Road Studios.
Florence, who was born in Bristol and qualified as a midwife at the city's Frenchay Hospital, spent the war years as a district nurse working through the Blitz at Portsmouth Naval Base. After the war, she trained for missionary work, and in October 1947, she left England for Ratnapur in Bangladesh.
For 28 years, Florence faced every kind of hardship working in the local hospital - bandits, battles, disease and danger - to make a lasting contribution to thousands of lives. Having recently retired as a missionary, she returned to England to work with the Reverend Alex Soloman in the parish of St George in the East in Stepney, London.
