Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Jenny GLEED (1900-?)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Jenny Gleed, pub barmaid, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews behind the bar of the Oporto Arms, in London’s West India Dock Road.
Born and raised in London’s Poplar, in the shadow of the West India docks, Jenny, married with two small boys, became mother to her younger brothers and sisters when their mother died in 1924.
It was a time of great poverty in the East End of London, but the cockney spirit of resilience, friendship and generosity shone through and created a close-knit community.
As barmaid of the Oporto Arms, Jenny – known to locals as Limehouse Jenny and well known for keeping order from behind the bar - acted as banker, guide, comforter and mother to the hundreds of sailors who docked in the area and drank in the pub.
