THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Ray Milland, actor, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews outside Thames Television’s Euston Road Studios.

Ray was born in Wales, and served in the Household Cavalry before buying himself out of the army in 1928 to pursue a career in acting. He found work as an extra and in bit parts in several British film productions.

This led to a nine-month contract with MGM and he moved to the United States where he worked as a stock actor. After being released by MGM, he was picked up by Paramount, who used Ray in a range of lesser speaking parts. He was loaned out to Universal in 1936 for a film called Three Smart Girls, and its success saw him given a lead role in the same year in The Jungle Princess alongside new starlet Dorothy Lamour. The film was a big success and catapulted both to stardom.

Ray remained with Paramount for almost 20 years, and as well as an Academy Award winning role in The Lost Weekend, he had starring roles in the films The Major and the Minor, The Big Clock, and The Thief, the last of which saw him nominated for his second Golden Globe. After leaving Paramount, he began directing and later moved into television.

“If I’d known this was happening… I’d have worn a hairpiece!”
