Eamonn Andrews introduces and comperes a review of the first series of This Is Your Life in a pre-recorded special edition.

Several ‘guests of honour’ or ‘subjects’ return to the BBC Television Theatre to recall incidents and stories relating to their experience of being surprised by Eamonn.

Although the show is proving a hit with the public after only 15 editions, there is negative criticism from some quarters of the Press. The producers commission this special edition to attempt to address these concerns and dispel any untruths.

Johanna Harris   Johanna Harris   Ted Ray

Gunilla Rix recalls how instrumental she was in bringing Johanna Harris before the cameras to be the subject of This Is Your Life, while Eamonn shows them the plaster cast that Mrs Rix wore to make Mrs Harris believe she had broken her leg, in a ruse to get Mrs Harris to the theatre.

Johanna Harris is then congratulated by Eamonn as she holds a surprise telegram telling her she is to meet HM Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, as a representative of the British Red Cross.

Eamonn springs a surprise on Ted Ray, and his wife Sybil, by bringing on Ted’s colleague, Kenneth Connor, while Sybil tells how she kept the secret from her husband.

Big Red Book   Eamonn Andrews   Maud Fairman

Eamonn welcomes Henry Starling, who was given a holiday in Italy for himself and his wife Maud as a result of his appearance on This Is Your Life. They meet the donor of the holiday, Mr K W Vale, while Henry recalls how he felt about the tribute.

In the same seat from which he was picked by American compere Ralph Edwards to be the subject of the first This Is Your Life, Eamonn Andrews hears Freddie Mills describe how Eamonn was tricked into believing that he, Freddie, was to be the principal subject.

Barry Knight, Chiswick schoolboy, who helped to bring record-breaker Donald Campbell before the cameras tells Eamonn how it was done.

Big Red Book   Big Red Book

Danny Roman, a driver whose timing often brought the subjects of This Is Your Life before the cameras on the second, tells Eamonn how he did it.

Hugh Oloff de Wet demonstrates to Eamonn how he was handcuffed in solitary confinement during the war.
