Geoffrey CAPES (1949-2024)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Geoff Capes, athlete and strongman, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews - with the help of his family - in central London.
Geoff, who was born in Holbeach, Lincolnshire, was a keen sports player at school and, having joined a local athletics club, was encouraged to try shot put and participate in competitions. In 1970, he joined the Cambridgeshire Constabulary and continued as an amateur athlete while working as a police constable.
He won the Amateur Athletic Association Indoor Shotputter Championships for the first time in 1971, going on to win the title five more times. He was twice Commonwealth champion, in 1974 and 1978 and twice the European indoor champion in 1974 and 1976.
