Geoffrey CAPES (1949-2024)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Geoffrey Capes, athlete and strongman, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews outside the London Hilton Hotel on Park Lane, having been led to believe he was there for a meeting.
Geoff, who was born in Holbeach, Lincolnshire, was a keen sports player at school and, having joined a local athletics club, was encouraged to try shot put and participate in competitions. In 1970, he joined the Cambridgeshire Constabulary and continued as an amateur athlete while working as a police constable.
He won the Amateur Athletic Association Indoor Shotputter Championships in 1971 and went on to win the title five more times. He was twice the Commonwealth shot put champion, in 1974 and 1978, and twice the European indoor champion, in 1974 and 1976. Geoff became known to a wider audience as a strongman after winning the inaugural Britain's Strongest Man in 1979.
