Mike YARWOOD AFM (1947-2025)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Charles Michael Yarwood, RAF rescue helicopter crewman, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews at the studios of Tyne Tees Television in Newcastle, having been led to believe he was there to take part in a different programme.
Mike, who was born in Wincham in Cheshire, joined the Air Training Corp at the age of 12. Having joined the RAF in 1965, he was posted to Chichester two years later before seeing service abroad, including stints in Singapore and Cyprus.
Back in the UK, he joined No. 22 Squadron at RAF Coltishall in Norfolk where he began to distinguish himself as a winchman on rescue missions. Now based with No. 202 Squadron at RAF Boulmer, Mike was recently awarded the Air Force Medal for Gallentry for his part in the rescue of 36 survivors when a North Sea oil platform collapsed in heavy weather in March 1979.
