Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Dick HOSKIN
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Dick Hoskin, charity fundraiser, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews in the audience at the BBC Television Theatre.
Dick, who was born in Lancashire and involved with theatre from a young age, made his professional debut at age nine and formed a minstrel group at age 15, but settled for more secure work as a railwayman. After serving with the Welsh Regiment during the First World War, he returned to the railways, where in 1936, an accident at work resulted in him breaking his back.
Despite his injuries, and with the help of a steel jacket, which he wore daily, his enthusiasm for performing led him to become involved in amateur dramatics in his home town of Colne and the surrounding areas, training hundreds of children in drama and producing annual pantomimes which raised more than £50,000 for charity.
