Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
James CARROLL (1912-?)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - James Carroll, retired policeman, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews - with the help of actor Jack Warner - in the audience at the BBC Television Theatre.
James, who was born in Kilkenny, Ireland, and grew up in the East End of London, worked as a shop assistant before joining the Metropolitan Police Force in 1932. By the early 1940s, Police Sergeant 93 of H Division, known to all as 'Big Jim', was a familiar figure on the streets of Limehouse.
Jim, who received five commendations from the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police over his long career before retiring, was also known for his charitable work with organisations such as Dr Barnardo's Homes, Save the Children Fund and Church of England's Children's Society.
