Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
G T CUMMINS (1895-1968)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - George Thomas Cummins, former newsreel cameraman, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews backstage at the BBC Television Theatre, having been led to believe he was there to be a guest on someone else's tribute.
Having volunteered for the Territorials as a boy, George served with the Royal Artillery during the First World War, receiving the Distinguished Conduct Medal for bravery in Flanders. After the war, Tommy, as he was known, spent time learning the film industry in Hollywood, California.
After returning to London, he became a successful newsreel cameraman, capturing the events of the time, including Grand Nationals and FA Cup Finals. Having established a sound newsreel company and a subsidiary of the US Paramount company, British Paramount News, in March 1931, he served as its Chief Editor during the Second World War.
