THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Stan Boardman, comedian, was surprised by Michael Aspel at the end of his stand-up show at the Paradise Rooms in Blackpool.

Stan, who was born in Liverpool and began his working life as a pipe fitter and welder, was a keen footballer in his youth and played amateur football for Skelmersdale United FC. After losing his job as a wagon driver, he entered a Butlin's holiday camp talent contest in 1976, winning a one-year contract to tour the company's camps across the country.

The following year, after appearing on the ITV talent show Opportunity Knocks, he became a regular stand-up comedian on the club circuit. Appearances on the ITV series The Comedians made him a household name, with other television work including hosting Runaround and The Fame Game.
