David BROOME OBE (1940-)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - David Broome, show jumper, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews while teaching young riders at a riding school in Northwood, Middlesex.
David, who was born in Cardiff and attended Monmouth School, rode from a young age and won his first prize at the age of 4. He was the leading junior rider of Wales six times and became the youngest rider to jump for Britain. During his first senior season in 1958, he became the leading rider in the country in terms of prizes won.
He competed in the 1960, 1964, 1968, and 1972 Olympics and won individual bronze medals in 1960, the same year he was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year at the age of 20. Regarded as one of the world's greatest equestrians, David held the individual European title three times, won the world title in 1970 - the first for Britain - and won the King George V Gold Cup a record four times.
