Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Richard MURDOCH (1907-1990)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Richard Murdoch, actor and entertainer, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews - with the help of Arthur Askey - while being interviewed on the top deck of a bus in central London.
Richard, who was born in Kent, studied at Charterhouse and Cambridge University, where he performed with the Cambridge Footlights. After appearing in musical comedy and revue in the West End and on tour, he made his first BBC radio broadcast in 1932 and later featured in early television broadcasts.
He became a household name when he was teamed with comedian Arthur Askey in the popular BBC radio show Band Waggon in 1938. After meeting Kenneth Horne while serving together in the RAF during the Second World War, they conceived, wrote, and starred in the long-running radio series Much-Binding-in-the-Marsh. Richard starred in numerous stage tours and films and was a regular on the BBC radio panel game show, Many a Slip.
