Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Ian WALLACE (1919-2009)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Ian Wallace, singer, actor and broadcaster, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews - with the help of Michael Aspel - as he arrived at Capital Radio in London, having been led to believe he was there for an interview.
Ian, who was born in London and educated at Charterhouse and the University of Cambridge, served with the Royal Artillery during the Second World War before developing tuberculosis. Having spent two years in hospital, where he produced shows and sang from his bed, Ian convalesced in Scotland, making his first professional appearance at the Park Theatre in Glasgow.
After further stage work with the Old Vic, Ian auditioned for the New London Opera Company and, as a bass baritone, played a range of roles at Glyndebourne and internationally throughout the 1950s. In addition, he developed a career in revue, theatre and broadcasting, including as a long-time panellist on the BBC radio panel game My Music.
