Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Jimmy HILL (1928-2015)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Jimmy Hill, broadcaster and former footballer, was surprised by Michael Aspel while addressing a meeting of football club chairmen at Walsall Football Club.
Jimmy, who was born in London, began his professional football career with Brentford FC in 1949, before he transferred to Fulham FC in 1952. As a player, Jimmy became chairman of the players' union and was active in campaigning for the scrapping of the Football League's £20 maximum wage, which he achieved in 1961.
Having retired as a player, Jimmy managed Coventry City FC between 1961 and 1967, and having steered the club to the First Division, he left to launch a broadcasting career, initially with ITV, before moving to the BBC in 1973, where presenting Match of the Day made him a household name.
