Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Marti CAINE (1945-1995)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Marti Caine, comedienne and entertainer, was surprised by Michael Aspel at Woburn Golf Club while receiving a golf lesson from comedian Tom O'Connor for a new BBC television series, Next.
Marti, who was born in Sheffield and first performed as a cabaret singer on the Yorkshire working men's club circuit, achieved national fame after winning the ITV talent show New Faces in 1975. She went on to star in her own television shows for the BBC in 1979 and later for ITV in the early 1980s.
She starred in the BBC television sitcom Hilary in 1984, which was written specifically for her, and in 1986 she performed a one-woman show at London's Donmar Warehouse, co-writing fourteen songs about her life experiences. She returned to the revived New Faces, hosting three series between 1986 and 1988.
Marti Caine was a subject of This Is Your Life on two occasions – previously surprised by Eamonn Andrews in March 1978 in Sheffield City Centre.
