Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Dominique PIRE (1910-1969)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Dominique Pire, Belgian friar and humanitarian, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews at the BBC Television Theatre, having been led to believe he was there to take part in a programme about his work.
Georges, who was born in Dinant, Belgium, entered the Dominican priory of La Sarte in Huy aged 18 and adopted the name Dominique after being ordained as a friar in 1932. During the Second World War, he served as a chaplain to the Belgian resistance and received the Croix de Guerre for his service.
After the war, he founded an organisation to help postwar refugees and, during the 1950s, built several villages in Austria and Germany to house thousands of displaced persons. Having dedicated his life to the cause of peace, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1958.
