Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Franklin DAY
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Franklin Day, teenager, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews while dancing on the stage of the BBC Television Theatre, having been led to believe he was taking part in a documentary about young people.
Franklin, an 18-year-old from Greys in Essex, studied at Quarry Hill School, where, as a keen sports player, he captained his football team aged 8. In 1960, while on a trip to Southend with friends, Franklin was thrown from a Big Wheel and was unconscious for 17 days.
Having suffered a broken back, a double fracture of the skull and being left completely blind, and despite doctors believing he would never walk again, Franklin miraculously recovered with treatment from Southend Hospital, Stoke Mandeville and rehabilitation at Leatherhead. His eyesight slowly returned, and, having fully recovered, he found a job as a bookkeeping assistant.
