Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Ted MOULT (1926-1986)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Ted Moult, farmer and radio and television personality, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews at the BBC Television Theatre, having been led to believe he was there to present a non-existent programme, Country Quiz.
Ted, who was born in Derby, became a farming apprentice after leaving school and had established his first dairy farm in Sinfin, on the outskirts of Derby, by the age of 22. He later became a farmer at Scaddows Farm in Ticknall, Derbyshire.
He first came to public attention in the 1950s on BBC Radio's general knowledge quiz, Brain of Britain. His later appearances on discussion programmes such as Any Questions and panel games such as Ask Me Another made him a household name by the mid-1960s.

Being an ordinary kind of bloke, there was one television appearance which didn't appeal to me much, though I suppose I could have been flattered. That was This Is Your Life, and Ted Moult was the subject.
I had travelled to London, ostensibly to do a pilot show for yet another quiz permutation, following which I was entertained at some considerable length in a restaurant, just opposite the television theatre where the final rehearsal was to take place.
Feeling well contented with life following my wining and dining, I just hadn't the guts, when Eamonn Andrews filled my sights, to suggest he took his book elsewhere. So I walked on the stage to be met by a Jersey cow, and also there were big bales of hay. "How much is all this worth per ton?" asked Eamonn. "Oh, I don't know," said I, "About £12 a ton", and lo and behold out came five kids, followed by my wife, who had been transported in strict secrecy all the way from home, for the occasion.
