Big Red Book
Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Evelyn BARK OBE (1900-1993)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Evelyn Bark, Director of International Affairs for the Red Cross, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews at the BBC Television Theatre, having been led to believe she was there to watch a film about the Red Cross.
Evelyn, who was born in Ilford, began volunteering with the British Red Cross at the outbreak of the Second World War while working as a secretary. In 1941, she joined the Foreign Relations department on a full-time basis, assisting civilians across Europe to trace relatives separated by the war.
At the end of the war, Evelyn - fluent in five languages - established a tracing service for missing persons, which in particular made it possible for concentration camp survivors to reunite with family and friends. She went on to hold several posts within the organisation, including Commissioner in Germany, Foreign Relations Adviser, and Director of International Affairs, a position she took up in 1949.
