Celebrating television's This Is Your Life
Sydney SCROGGIE (1919-2006)
THIS IS YOUR LIFE - Sydney Scroggie, hillwalker, writer and poet, was surprised by Eamonn Andrews at the BBC Television Theatre, having been led to believe he was there to take part in a documentary programme.
Sydney, who was born in Canada but grew up in Scotland, studied at John Watson's School in Edinburgh. In April 1945, while serving with the Army in Italy, he was left blinded and lost a leg when an enemy mine exploded near him.
Having spent time rehabilitating at St Dunstan's, he combined his desire to write with his love of walking and the outdoors, in particular the Scottish countryside. Despite his disabilities, he climbed over 600 hills and published poetry and books that captured the essence of the Scottish landscape.
